Seedling #98JS1X registered as SHAPE SHIFTER
Appearance is that of a pseudacorus-ensata hybrid or an amoena pseudacorus except for her dark blue-green leaves. Blooms are small, on the order of a Siberian. In average soil with minimal water blooming height is 36". She typically shows 2 branches (most are double socketed) plus terminal with three to four buds and has the potential for producing 4 branches under ideal conditions.
Since both of her parents prefer damp soil with generous amounts of compost, it can be assumed that this seedling will also prefer those conditions.
Standards are a crisp white and arrow shaped. Stylearms are white with a yellow rib. A light chrome yellow in bud, the falls open as pale primrose yellow. The signal is a dark maroon pseudacorus type. A lime green line runs from deep in the throat to just past the end of the signal. The leaves show the familiar occasional "wrinkle" found in the leaves of ADRENALINE RUSH.
Paper chromatography done using the leaves of all individual irises involved has confirmed her pedigree. While we're certain of the crosses involved, additional tests are planned to learn as much about this new baby as we can.

A division of SHAPE SHIFTER (left) compared to a division of I. pseudacorus (right).

Her first season of bloom produced over 150 seeds from selfing but only 11 germinated. It's still way too early to guess at what the grown up seedlings will look like but I think the amount of variation is intriguing and have posted Baby Pictures of some of the little ones. Of the germinated seedlings, only 8 have grown to blooming size.
