MEETING NOTES:
Railroad/Depot News
Schedules and posters for the 2006 Train Ride Season are available at the Depot
Lions Curt Lynn, Dick Norton, and Kevin Kinsella dismantled and removed one set of seats from the coach car to see how difficult it would be, and to time the effort. They determined that this would probably be a great project for some high school kids who were interested in obtaining some community service hours. If you know of any kids who may be willing to assist in this demolition project, please contact Lion Dick.
Depot Management
Lion Curt Lynn reported that a new front door latch is in place and new track lighting has been placed above the souvenir area. Lion Curt also created a new copy machine cabinet in the office. This cabinet provides more storage and gives a more comfortable/ergonomic workstation by eliminating the need for the operator to bend over to use the machine. Of course, now some of the vertically challenged members will need a stepstool
;-)
Down River Days
A Chairperson is still needed for the 2006 Down River Days Committee. The Chair serves mainly as a Liaison between subcommittees and community groups that wish to help with the event. We are also looking for help with T-shirt sales, security, permits, etc.
St. Patricks Day Party
By all accounts, everyone in attendance at the annual Irish celebration had a delightful time! Great entertainment was provided by Donovan Johnson and the Choir, pleasant company was the order of the day, and many conversations and jokes were sprinkled with blarney in the Depot that night! An incredibly tasty corned beef dinner was prepared and served by the Pine Forest Rebekahs!
CONGRATULATIONS to the raffle item winners! Perennial winner Vi Shanklin won the Guinness golf accessories; the celtic shawl/scarf was won by Lion Jack Sherry; Kaye Saxe won the Celtic Clays casserole dish; and Kristen Nester won the Galway Crystal Vase. Lion Larry Pollock was over-qualified as the Blarney Auctioneer again this year, assisting many Lions in acquiring some additional auction items, whether they needed them or not. Thanks to all who participated!
Projects
Lions Marita Norton and Gloria Coppock are working on the projects committee again this year. Notice for Special Project requests has been published in the Selkirk Sun. Applications are available at Selkirk High School, or from Gloria Coppock, and are due back by May 31
Sight
Remember that the first weekend in the month of May is White Cane Days! Please leave room on your calendar to volunteer some time that weekend
Also, May is Recycle for Sight Month, so please remember to bring in any old prescription glasses to be recycled. Last year, NPOV Lions donated over 250 pairs of glasses to this worthy cause! Collection boxes are located at the Selkirk Clinic, POTC telephone office in Ione, and at the Depot. Please contact Lion Karen Kinsella if you have questions.
Other News
In March, Lion Marvel Smith brought forth a recommendation to assist in paying for burial costs for Edna Grape, wife of PZC and NPOV member Larry Grape. Currently, the Ione Community Church has arranged for payment of cremation and burial costs, but there are no provisions to obtain a headstone marker. It has been recommended that the Lions Club pay for a suitable grave marker out of respect to PZC Larry Grape for all the years of dedication to the Lions Club. Further information will be provided at the April 6th meeting.
SPRING IS COMING and that means work parties will be scheduled to prepare the trains for the 2006 season. Any assistance from Lions or local residents would be greatly appreciated. Watch the bulletins for further information.
