Down River Days Friday Night Train Ride and Dinner

The special Down River Days Train Ride is scheduled for Friday, July 29, 2005 to kickoff the weekend celebration. This ride is free to Lions and their guests. The train will pull out of the station at 6:00 p.m. so passengers should plan to be at the Lions Depot in Ione by 5:30 p.m. The train will stop over in Metaline Falls for dinner at the American Legion and will leave Metaline Falls at about 9:00 p.m. for the return trip to Ione, arriving back at the depot at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Dinner is being catered by the Cutter Theatre and served at the American Legion at a cost of $12.00 (US) per person ($15.00 CAN). Dinner reservations are a must, as seating is limited. Call Judy Ashton at the Cutter Theatre (509) 446-4108 to make arrangements for advance purchase of dinner tickets. Tickets should be purchased by Monday, July 22 to allow for an accurate head count for the cooks.

Coming Right Up Zone E-8

This year's Zone e-8 Picnic will be held on August 26, 27, and 28, 2005. It will be hosted by the Kootenay Lake Lions Club and will be located in Riondel, approximately 15 minutes north of Crawford Bay, B.C. on Riondel Road.

Along with the nine-hole golf tourney to be played on the Rondel Golf Course on Saturday morning, there will also be a Bean Bag Tourney. For those who do not golf, the Kootenay Lake Lions have requested the services of two local historians who will entertain those interested with local lore and history in the Riondel Museum. Entertainment for later in the day will be provided by Ed Fuzzin who will be putting together a group of fiddlers – you won't want to miss the spirited series of jigs and reels!

As always, food is on everyone's mind after a strenuous day of good fun. Friday night, the Kootenay Lake Lions will provide a Chili feed. On Saturday morning they will host an "All You Can Eat" pancake breakfast for $3.00 – so bring your appetite! For dinner on Saturday night, our hosts will provide the salads and deserts – and the salads and deserts are reputed to be second to none - all you bring is your favorite meat to grill. There are markets along the way so you can pick up you meat and favorite beverages after crossing the border.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Please let the Kootenay Lake Lions know if you plan to attend by no later than August 1, 2005. To contact them for information on accommodations, agenda, activities, and to let them know when you will be arriving, please contact Past Zone Chairman Chuck Lloyd at P.O. Box 52, Crawford Bay,

MEETING NOTES:

lionmeetingnotesDuring the June 2, 2005 regular meeting, clarification was made regarding the pool pavilion in the park. The pool will not be removed, but will actually be filled in and covered over with a concrete slab. The sides of the existing pavilion are being removed to convert it to a large covered shelter with open sides. The electrical wiring and cement pouring should be completed by early July.

Lion Gayle Pollock was presented with an award in recognition of all of her work with the Lions Mobile Screening Unit, meal planning, the Christmas Party and many other club activities. Lion Gayle accepted an award on behalf of Lion Larry Pollock for his service as Tail Twister, among other things.

It was reported that plans for Down River Days are on track. The raffle tickets have been disbursed to members to help with sales. Dave King will be the band performing at the street dance – he will be paid rain or shine. The location for the "Battle of the Bands" is currently planned for somewhere in the park – near the Beer Garden or possibly under the pavilion if the weather is inclement. Lion Marvel Smith reported that all ten banners for main street have been sponsored and Seattle City Light has been approached about building the hanging hardware. The NPOV Lions present voted to purchase a new banner for hanging across the highway in Ione. There will be pre-ride gathering for the Pipers at Lion Jim McNally's home on Friday evening and a picnic gathering and PZC Tom Mackey's home on Saturday evening.

Lion Bob Shanklin reported that after some discussion of the need to accept credit card payments for ticket reservations, the committee voted to empower the President and Treasurer to make the decision on what form or services will be used to make that happen.

Past Zone Chairman Kim Di Rienz reported that the Multiple District 19 Annual Convention was an excellent event. PZC Kim was assisted by Lions Marvel Smith and Lion President Kim Cress in conducting the Memorial Service. PZC Tom Mackey constructed the candle holders. Many positive comments were received by PZC Kim after the service.

PZC Bill Seebach installed the following new officers:

2nd Vice Pres.: Tom Mackey
Secretary: Kim Di Rienz
1-Year Board Members: Dick Ashton & Marvel Smith
2-Year Board Member: Carol Stone
Lion Tamer: Gayle Pollock

The remaining new officers will be installed during the first regular meeting in July.

During the June 16, 2005 Board meeting, the proposed budget and project proposals were reviewed and recommendations were made for club approval. PZC Tom Mackey presented a bid to have the club's coach car painted ($3,507.76). The cost would be reduced if members did the masking. The colors would be silver for the roof, and green for the sides. The undercarriage would be painted black.

Lion Gayle Pollock has been in touch with the Selkirk Clinic and they are interested in working with us when the Lions Mobile Health Screening Unit comes to our community in fall.

It was reported that Nancy Riley and the local Master Gardeners are donating all of the flowers for our depot flower boxes.

During the June 16, 2005 regular meeting, members enjoyed a meal provided by the men of the club. The meal was followed by a program on drug awareness presented by Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Deputies Queston Youk and Mark Brownell. The program was very informative and well received.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:

SmileDuring the June 16, 2005 regular meeting, the recommendations of the Projects Committee and the Board of Directors regarding funding of new projects were approved.

MEMBERSHIP:

It is with sad hearts that we say farewell to two former members of the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club. Allan Emrick recently died as a result of an accident. Allan was doing two of the things he loved – helping others and riding a horse. Allan was a member of our club, as was his father before him – Charter Member Marion Emrick. Allan was active with the local equestrian 4H club and had worked with our club to host an "Horseback Riding for the Blind" event for students from the Washington State School for the Blind. Allan will be sorely missed by this community.

Former Lion Bill Crist also passed away recently. Bill actively served in the club and worked hard to "modernize" the cars. Bill also served his community as a Member of the City Council after he retired from Boundary Dam. Bill died of complications of diabetes.

cakeMembers are reminded that dues for the coming Lion-Year, in the amount of $54.80, are due by July 6, 2005.

Happy Birthday to July Lions Jake Doyle, Gary Ewing, Denny Schlegel, and Bob Wilson.

Proposed Change to Constitution and Bylaws

A change has been proposed to the Constitution and Bylaws to identify the votes needed to pass motions in regular meetings. The current wording states that the presence in person of any majority of the members in good standing is necessary for a quorum at any meeting. It is extremely rare that a majority of members attend any business meeting and does not always occur even at special event/party meetings. It is recommended that the text found in Article XI – Meetings, Section E be replaced with the following:

"A majority of those members, in good standing, present at a regular meeting must vote in the affirmative in order to pass a motion."

This proposed change will be voted on at the second regular meeting in July (July 21, 2005).
