MEETING NOTES:
Depot News
Lion Curt Lynn reported that the electric wall heaters are now working and he will purchase couple to have in reserve. It was recommended that the roof of the depot be extended to cover the newly extended deck. Snow is now falling from the roof and piling up on the deck. Lion Curt will obtain an estimate and will bring it to the club for approval. Lion Curt reported that he is looking into replacing the outside lights with mercury vapor lights, which should last longer and provide better lighting, according to the PUD.
Lion Marita Norton reported that the fans for the kitchen have arrived and are ready for installation. This should help with temperature control in the kitchen when the cooks are busy.
Publicity
Lion Dick Norton reported that the Hotel/Motel tax reimbursement of $1500 for 2006 has been received. The club has requested $2,000 from this source for brochure printing for 2007.
Lion Dick Norton shared a tourism magazine/advertiser that was published by the North Columbia Monthly. It is a very nice publication and the Lions Club Excursion Train is listed in it.
Youth
Lion Marvel Smith reported that this is the year for the Pine Forest Rebekahs to send a student to the UN Pilgrimage. The cost for a single student is $1800. In the past our club has provided half of the funding to send a student. The membership decided to donate $900 to be used to sponsor a student’s participation in the UN Pilgrimage.
Two requests for funds have been received from students planning to participate in the People to People program on a trip to China. The cost per student is $6,000. Initially, it was not clear whether or not these requests met the guidelines outlined in the club’s policy for Youth Support. Upon further investigation, the Youth Support Committee made a recommendation to fund these students from the Youth Support Fund when they provided appropriate receipts.
Lion Carol Stone reported that the Lions Mint Sales do not appear to be cost-effective as a fundraiser. Mints are often taken without any donation being made. Lion Carol wasn’t sure how much the mints cost but felt that it may be costing the club money to “give away” mints. Lion Carol will do some research to determine the cost of the mints and she will present to the club any plans to reduce or phase out sales of the mints.
Down River Days
Down River Days 2007 was discussed and the membership reviewed the events that Lions participated in last year and the number of Lion volunteers required to complete each task. It was decided that DRD participation by NPOV Lions will be limited to the train rides, cowboy breakfast and parade (including the pipers and their associated activities). Lions will not organize the Street Dance, Little Miss Contest, conduct a raffle, or sell t-shirts at DRD this year. Lion Karen Kinsella notified the Town of Ione of the Club’s decision by letter, and represented the Club at a Town Council meeting. Leanna Powers, Kevin Foy, and Kathy Mondich, all of Ione, have volunteered to take responsibility for organizing the vendors in the park, along with taking care of the additional toilets and garbage service due to the increased number of people visiting the park. This team will also coordinate the other DRD activities. It was discussed that they may do a raffle, with the proceeds to benefit Ione Park.
Cowboy Breakfast Chair Dick Ashton was consulted regarding the proposal to have the club cook breakfast for the bicycle tour group that will be camping at Box Canyon Dam’s campground in July. Lion Dick felt that is was a feasible project. He will work with Lion Nate Jones to work out the details. The breakfast will need to be served on a weekday so we will be looking for volunteers to help with it.
Other News
Fleece Lion Vests are still available for purchase through the Parma, Idaho Lions Club, where Lion Curt Lynn’s cousin is a member. It sure would be a nice warm layer to wear during those chilly Autumn Color Train Rides! Order forms are available at the Depot.
It was reported that The Cutter Theatre has donated a Cappuccino machine to the club. It is brand new. Lion Susan Mason has been designated as the Club Barrista.
It was reported that the Selkirk Clinic will be hosting a Health Fair toward the end of April The Lions have been invited to have a presence there. It would be a good opportunity to share information about our programs, which include health screening of students.
Don’t forget to save the TABS from your pop cans and bring them to the Depot. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF TABS ALREADY COLLECTED!!! I hope they don’t have a weight restriction when we try to bring them through the border crossing. Some clubs are having a contest to bring the most tabs to the Spring Conference in Fernie, B.C. in April 2007, and I believe that we may be in the running for some kind of recognition. Please consider helping to deliver them to the Conference personally!
