The Holiday Party was a lovely end-of- the-year celebration, and the Ashtons were wonderful hosts. Koni Oliver created festive plates of sweets for all to take home. Thanks to all who attended and/or helped with the preparations!

Lions are victim of Vandalism!
Lion President Karen Kinsella reported on vandalism that occurred before the holidays. One of the windows on the west side of the Depot was smashed when a large rock was thrown through it. Lion Karen taped up the window and filed a police report. There may be a possibility of salvaging the slider from the broken window and using it to replace a cracked slider on another window at the other end of the depot. Lion Curt Lynn obtained an estimate of approximately $422 for repair services to replace the broken window.

There was also damage to Coach Car #960 where someone attempted to get into the car. They broke out the etched (Chessie System logo) window in the door and attempted to open the door that way. They were unable to open the door because it requires skeleton key to unlock. They pulled off the doorknob on the outside and damaged the decorative wood around the window. Lion Glen Saxe has nailed up some wood to temporarily close the window. Lion Glen said that the door will need to be taken off in order to make the repairs. It is patched up for the moment and will be repaired in the spring. Lion Jim McNally feels that the club should replace the door glass with a similar etching, and install some kind of protection over it. This will be discussed at a future meeting.

MEETING NOTES:

Depot News
notesLion Curt Lynn reported that the electric wall heaters are now working and he will purchase couple to have in reserve. It was recommended that the roof of the depot be extended to cover the newly extended deck. Snow is now falling from the roof and piling up on the deck. Lion Curt will obtain an estimate and will bring it to the club for approval. Lion Curt reported that he is looking into replacing the outside lights with mercury vapor lights, which should last longer and provide better lighting, according to the PUD.

Lion Marita Norton reported that the fans for the kitchen have arrived and are ready for installation. This should help with temperature control in the kitchen when the cooks are busy.

Publicity
Lion Dick Norton reported that the Hotel/Motel tax reimbursement of $1500 for 2006 has been received. The club has requested $2,000 from this source for brochure printing for 2007.

Lion Dick Norton shared a tourism magazine/advertiser that was published by the North Columbia Monthly. It is a very nice publication and the Lions Club Excursion Train is listed in it.

Youth
Lion Marvel Smith reported that this is the year for the Pine Forest Rebekahs to send a student to the UN Pilgrimage. The cost for a single student is $1800. In the past our club has provided half of the funding to send a student. The membership decided to donate $900 to be used to sponsor a student’s participation in the UN Pilgrimage.

Two requests for funds have been received from students planning to participate in the People to People program on a trip to China. The cost per student is $6,000. Initially, it was not clear whether or not these requests met the guidelines outlined in the club’s policy for Youth Support. Upon further investigation, the Youth Support Committee made a recommendation to fund these students from the Youth Support Fund when they provided appropriate receipts.

Lion Carol Stone reported that the Lions Mint Sales do not appear to be cost-effective as a fundraiser. Mints are often taken without any donation being made. Lion Carol wasn’t sure how much the mints cost but felt that it may be costing the club money to “give away” mints. Lion Carol will do some research to determine the cost of the mints and she will present to the club any plans to reduce or phase out sales of the mints.

Down River Days
Down River Days 2007 was discussed and the membership reviewed the events that Lions participated in last year and the number of Lion volunteers required to complete each task. It was decided that DRD participation by NPOV Lions will be limited to the train rides, cowboy breakfast and parade (including the pipers and their associated activities). Lions will not organize the Street Dance, Little Miss Contest, conduct a raffle, or sell t-shirts at DRD this year. Lion Karen Kinsella notified the Town of Ione of the Club’s decision by letter, and represented the Club at a Town Council meeting. Leanna Powers, Kevin Foy, and Kathy Mondich, all of Ione, have volunteered to take responsibility for organizing the vendors in the park, along with taking care of the additional toilets and garbage service due to the increased number of people visiting the park. This team will also coordinate the other DRD activities. It was discussed that they may do a raffle, with the proceeds to benefit Ione Park.

Cowboy Breakfast Chair Dick Ashton was consulted regarding the proposal to have the club cook breakfast for the bicycle tour group that will be camping at Box Canyon Dam’s campground in July. Lion Dick felt that is was a feasible project. He will work with Lion Nate Jones to work out the details. The breakfast will need to be served on a weekday so we will be looking for volunteers to help with it.

Other News
Fleece Lion Vests are still available for purchase through the Parma, Idaho Lions Club, where Lion Curt Lynn’s cousin is a member. It sure would be a nice warm layer to wear during those chilly Autumn Color Train Rides! Order forms are available at the Depot.

It was reported that The Cutter Theatre has donated a Cappuccino machine to the club. It is brand new. Lion Susan Mason has been designated as the Club Barrista.

It was reported that the Selkirk Clinic will be hosting a Health Fair toward the end of April The Lions have been invited to have a presence there. It would be a good opportunity to share information about our programs, which include health screening of students.

Don’t forget to save the TABS from your pop cans and bring them to the Depot. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF TABS ALREADY COLLECTED!!! I hope they don’t have a weight restriction when we try to bring them through the border crossing. Some clubs are having a contest to bring the most tabs to the Spring Conference in Fernie, B.C. in April 2007, and I believe that we may be in the running for some kind of recognition. Please consider helping to deliver them to the Conference personally!

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:

serviceLion Marvel Smith reported that an additional Christmas banner for Main Street in Ione has been purchased by I-Own Auto Parts. In the future, the sponsor will be responsible for payment of the total cost of the banner and associated costs.

Donations/Requests for funding
It was decided to donate two pairs of train ride tickets to the Washington State Nurses Foundation for a donation towards their May 7, 2007 convention fundraising effort.

A request for donation was received from the Selkirk Humanities Foundation and the Club decided to donate $100 to this worthy cause.

The Fire District #2 project to purchase a laptop computer and in-focus projector for training purposes has been completed. The membership also voted to disburse the $5,000 approved in the budget to Fire District #2 for use in building the new fire station on north LeClerc Road.

Lion Dick Norton brought forth a potential club project. One of the three ambulances operated by Fire District #2 has broken down. It is a used vehicle that was purchased years ago and was retrofitted to serve as an ambulance. It has had numerous repairs made on it and it is not worth investing the thousands of dollars needed to make it operational again. Fire District #2 does not receive any tax funds for support of the ambulances. It is a pay-for-services operation and many individuals being transported are unable to pay for the entire expense. Until the ambulance can be replaced, we will be down to two ambulances to cover the north county. Lion Dick presented some information about a program by another club to help purchase a means of emergency medical conveyance (in this case a helicopter, as shown in a recent edition of the LION Magazine). He is suggesting that the club consider this as a big project, funding half of the cost of purchasing a used ambulance (half of approximately $60,000). Lion Secretary Kim Di Rienz will check into the availability of any Lions Int’l funding to match any funds donated.
