Welcome New Officers for 2005-2006!

It's always a pleasure to see new smiling faces at the front table, so please extend your appreciation to Carolyn Myers, Kim Di Rienz and the other active officers for committing to their year of service to NPOV Lions Club. The participation and volunteerism of ALL the members in NPOV Lions Club is the most valuable resource we have in North Pend Oreille County. Thank you for your service!

MEETING NOTES:

Approved Change to Constitution and Bylawslionmeetingnotes

At the July 21, 2005 regular meeting, it was voted that the text found in Article XI – Meetings, Section E be replaced with the following:

"A majority of those members, in good standing, present at a regular meeting must vote in the affirmative in order to pass a motion."

The membership present voted unanimously to change the Constitution to reflect this new text.

July 7, 2005 – Regular Meeting

Lion Bob Shanklin reported the trains are ready for DRD and painting on the Lions coach car should be done next week prior to DRD. Sat. rides are 1:00 P.M. and 3:00 P.M.-Sun rides are 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. (Ed. Note: Painting of the car was completed July 26th and it looks great!)

Lion Curt Lynn reported the bathrooms are clean, open and ready for DRD train rides. Drip irrigation to the trees is completed and the air conditioner installed. The small outbuilding for refreshments won't be ready in time for DRD but should be ready for fall rides. Lion Curt reported that Lion Nathan Jones will arrange to have Box Canyon Dam summer workers mow the Depot lawn as needed.

Lion Marvel Smith reviewed the events schedule for Down River Days and will arrange for display of schedule posters at various places in the local area.

Lion Marvel also reported that there are 3,000 raffle tickets for sale! Any Lions member selling more than 75 tickets will get a free DRD t-shirt. Remember that this is a great fund-raising program for NPOV Lions and the more tickets sold, the more resources we will have for the coming year! Everyone should have the opportunity to win one of the great prizes available! The raffle drawing will be Sunday July 31st at 5:00pm.

Lion Dick Norton recommended a review of Train Host responsibilities. Host duties are printed in the membership roster. Lion Dick requested that any incidents occurring to train passengers be reported to the EMTs and him (for insurance reasons).

Lion Carol Stone recommended conducting a Train Host review/training session (ie: use of radios, handling injuries, etc.) every year prior to first train ride. Recommendation was strongly supported by members present. Lion Tom Mackey will look into the possibility of re-starting the previously performed Train Host Skits as a means of refreshing members of the Host duties. These skits are likely to occur during a dinner meeting to provide members with dinner and a show. There will be no extra charge for this special entertainment.

July 21, 2005– Regular and Board Meetings
Lion Bob Shanklin reported that the Railroad Historical Society will pay for materials should the club decide to paint the other rail coaches. Lion Bob also participated in a local "sting" operation by removing a large wasp nest from the train bathroom without suffering any visible physical damage. Lion Bob said there is still a need for Train Hosts for DRD train rides.

President Carolyn Myers reported the sign for Metaline Falls has been completed with the shortfall of financing to complete the project donated by Metaline Falls Hardware.

Lion Marvel Smith reported all is ready for Down River Days. Banners are in place along Main Street (and they look great!). Lion Dick Norton arranged the details for the insurance. Street Dance will be from 8:30 to 12:30pm but there is some question whether there will be a battle of the bands. The Grand Marshal(s) will be Eva Gale and Al Six. Lions Kathy Mondich and Sally Dunn will follow the parade and be recognized as co-chair of DRD.

Lion Marvel reviewed the activities for club members to participate in:
Friday night at 5:00pm at Lion Jim McNally's-a reception for the Pipers followed by the flag ceremony at the Vets corner and City Hall. Everyone going on the train must be at the depot by 5:30. The train will leave at 6:00pm for dinner at the Legion in Metaline Falls.

Saturday 5:00pm at Lion Tom Mackey's-potluck for the Pipers and Club members.

The remaining new officers (Lion Kimberly McNaughton and Lion Marita Norton) will be installed during the first regular meeting in September (there will not be a regular meeting in August).

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:

service with a smileLion Kimberly McNaughton has done an incredible job collecting money for the Lions Mints! It must be all of the folks in town buying mints to get rid of their coffee-breath! ;-) Thanks, Kimberly!

Lion Dick Norton noted that both the Miner and Selkirk Sun had pictures of the AED at the Cutter Theater with mention of the NOPV Lions purchase of the wall-mounted case.

Lion Gloria Coppock reported all letters have been sent to those who submitted requests for Special Projects. A letter of Thanks was received from First Books. All approved projects must be completed by July 1, 2006.

K2 NOTE: The trip to Riondel is lovely and is only a short ride from North Pend Oreille Valley! The scenery in southern B.C. is great and you will travel on the longest free ferry ride in the world across beautiful Kootenay Lake. Crawford Bay has a delightful community of Artisans located in close proximity to each other and their talents include weavers, blacksmith, glass blower, broom maker, potter, etc. It would be a lovely weekend excursion, not to mention all of the fun you'd have with the Kookenay Lions!

Please consider attending this event and representing the NPOV Lions Club!

A Lessonlesson

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?"

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity... boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything, they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.
