NPOV Lions Celebrate 32nd Charter Night!

Special guests included Vice District Governor Frank Berglund and Zone Chairman John Bowles. Lions Hope McRae and John O’Neil were visiting from the Nelson Lions Club and Lions Paul and Mary Orton came to visit from the Spokane Hillyard Lions Club.

Heather Smiley provided piano music during the social hour that preceded the meeting, with a small presentation after dinner. Heather is a former piano student of Lion Marvel Smith and certainly did her former teacher proud! As expected, another delicious dinner was prepared and served by the Pine Forest Rebekahs. The chicken was done to perfection and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Lion Jack Sherry was the lucky winner of the drawing for a free dinner at the Charter Night Celebration. Again. How does he DO that so often? Anyone with information to explain this phenomenon should please come forward…

VDG Frank read a brief history of the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club and ZC John Bowles inducted two new members: Ron Waller and Glenn Mason.

Lion President Carolyn Myers expressed appreciation to all Club members for their help and support during the past year. President Carolyn also presented awards for service to the following Lions:

  • Kim Di Rienz for her exceptional work as Secretary. Lion Kim keeps our Club up-to-date and ensures that we conform to the standards set by the Lions Organization.
  • Dick Norton for his work as Treasurer and Insurance Committee Chair.
  • Marita Norton for her work with Souvenir Sales.
  • Dick Ashton for his work on the Cowboy Breakfast at Down River Days.
  • Karen and Kevin Kinsella for their work as adoptive parents of the club’s train car.
  • Kimberly McNaughton as Rookie Lion of the Year for her work on the scholarship committee and White Cane Days.
  • Kim Cress was given special recognition for her behind-the-scenes work with railroad reservations, webpage management, printing raffle, train tickets and schedules, and all of the extra community work she does (County Fair, etc.).
  • And last but not least, Lion Bob Shanklin was awarded the distinction of being Lion of the Year! Lion Bob was recognized for his many years of service to the NPOV Lions excursion train both before and after becoming a Lion.

MEETING NOTES:

Railroad/Depot News pen
Schedules and posters for the 2006 Train Ride Season are available at the Depot. The tri-fold color train ride brochures created by Janis Haglund turned out very well and we are receiving many favorable comments from the public. President Carolyn Myers reported that we are receiving $1,500 from the hotel/motel tax board for the printing of the brochures and posters.

A very well-attended work party was held on Saturday, April 8, 2006 to remove seats in the closed car. Members dismantled the seats from the car and separated the salvageable metal from the trash portions of the old seats. Work was also done to repair the floor of the restroom trailer, and another storage trailer was cleaned out. Thanks so much to all of those who attended – we got Lunch was held at the Kinsella’s home. Another small work party was held on April 22, with crews working toward completion of the floor repair (it will be done soon!), cleaning woodwork walls in the coach car, removing the ceiling fixtures in the coach car, and preparation of the ceiling for painting.

It was reported that we need a chairperson to oversee the concessions in the depot this season. Lions Carol Stone and Gayle Pollock have agreed to serve as advisors for the new concession crew, providing guidance and advice based on their extensive experience running the entire operation last year.

Depot Management
Lion Curt Lynn requested that a co-chair be found to assist with managing the work parties at the Depot, due to conflicts with his work schedule.

Lion Marvel Smith identified the need to have a specific description of work to be done by those hired to clean the Depot. Lion Marvel will work with Lion Curt to work up a specific list of work duties and responsibilities.

Down River Days
Lee Stark is continuing her efforts to produce a special trading pin she designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Down River Days. The vendor used in the past for our trading pins is no longer available and Lee is deciding on a new vendor.

The theme for Down River Days is “Over the River and Through the Woods to Down River Days We Go.” Lion Carolyn Myers is still looking for a chairman for the Down River Days committee.

Projects
Lion Marita Norton reported that applications for new projects are now available at Selkirk High School or directly from Gloria Coppock. Notice for Special Project requests has also been published in the Selkirk Sun. The deadline for application submission is May 31, 2006. As in recent years, a special meeting will be held in June to develop recommendations for distributing requested funds.

Scholarship
Tail Twister Marita Norton’s pastry wheel raised approximately $47.00 for the scholarship fund at the St. Patrick’s Day Party. Members were happy to put their money on the board, spin the wheel, and try baked goods with Blarney-inspired names.

Sight
At the April 6th meeting, the club agreed to move White Cane Days to May 12 & 13, 2006 due to a schedule conflict. Please leave room on your calendar to volunteer some time that weekend. Contact Kimberly McNaughton to sign up for a time on Friday or Saturday.

May is Recycle for Sight Month, so please remember to bring in any old prescription glasses to be recycled. Last year, NPOV Lions donated over 250 pairs of glasses to this worthy cause! Collection boxes are located at the Selkirk Clinic, POTC telephone office in Ione, and at the Depot. Please contact Lion Karen Kinsella if you have questions.

Other News
Lions Kim Di Rienz, Carolyn Myers, Karen Kinsella, Kevin Kinsella, and Marvel Smith presented the necrology/memorial service at the District E Spring Conference on April 29th. Lion Marvel Smith provided wonderful music on her keyboard. Carolyn Myers lit a candle for each Zone, and the names of 34 deceased Lions were read by Lions Kevin and Karen Kinsella. It was a touching ceremony and NPOV Lions received many complimentary comments. Special Thanks to Lion Kim Di Rienz for organizing the program and for selecting such pertinent readings.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:

serviceAt the April 6th meeting, a proposal was presented for the purchase of a headstone to mark the graves of Past District Governor Larry Grape and his partner in service Edna. Members of the club had been unaware that Larry’s grave had never been marked with a stone until it was learned that the nursing home that Edna stayed in until her death “cashed in” her burial policy and took the money leaving no funds for even her burial. One of the local churches and many members of the community contributed money for Edna’s cremation and burial, but there was no money left for a headstone. It was decided that the Lions would take care of the headstone matter, and a plain headstone design was developed and submitted to the Club for review.

The general member consensus was that PDG Larry Grape had been a very involved member of the Club and perhaps deserved a nicer headstone than the original design. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home was contacted to see how much more it would cost to add a Lions emblem and nursing insignia and the words “Partners in Service” to the stone. A preliminary design was submitted and Kurt Knapp indicated that the cost would be the same as for the plain headstone. He said that the discount was “the least we could do” since the community had been so generous and concerned about this situation. The headstone has been ordered and is expected to be completed at the end of May. Thanks so much to Sherman-Knapp for their considerate handling of this matter. It has been proposed by some Lions members that a short graveside service be held when the headstone has been placed. To find out further information, watch the Bulletin or come to the Club meetings.

MEMBERSHIP:

Just a reminder that the Board Meetings will be held at 6:00pm prior to the First Business meeting of the month. This will allow Board balloonsMembers to approve new members two weeks prior to their scheduled installation. It was decided that Dinner meetings were the preferred night for installations.

Lion Bill Seebach has agreed to take over the 3-year Membership Board position. This will be a great enhancement to the Board and we welcome Lion Bill’s sage input and guidance! Let’s bring in some new members for the Board to review!

The Roster for the 2006-2007 Lion year is in progress. Please see Kim Cress or Karen Kinsella if you have changes, additions, or other comments on this publication.
